Marion Man Bikes For Books
MARION -- Marion school board member Wayne Tate joined bikers with the Tour de Hope event Saturday morning to raise money for another cause.
Tate is riding across the state to raise funds to buy electronic books for students. The goal is raise $100,000 for the e-books pilot program. Tate plans to bike over 1,000 miles around Illinois, ending up in Carmi. He says the current school books are outdated and they lack the funds to buy new ones.
"Instead of just saying, 'that's too bad,' we're trying to raise the money in whatever ways we can. That's what this rides about," says Tate.
So far, they've raised around $40,000 and have already purchased 133 e-books. They'll begin using them in a couple of weeks.
