BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A Belleville man is jailed on $100,000 bond after being accused of taking a 2-year-old girl into a cold swimming pool and pummeling her.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1naFm8b) reports 25-year-old Miguel Luna Jr. is charged with aggravated battery and child endangering.

St. Clair County sheriff's Capt. Scott Weymouth says the case surfaced early Sunday when deputies were called to the Belleville hospital where the girl's mother had taken her to be treated for exposure to the cold and bruises.

Weymouth says investigators determined that a drunken Luna had taken the girl into the swimming pool about two hours earlier.

State child-welfare advocates say the girl and two other children are in relatives' care.

Online court records don't show if Luna has an attorney. His home telephone number has been disconnected.
