By WSIL Manager

POPE CO. -- Two lost hikers were rescued Tuesday morning after spending the night in the Shawnee National Forest.

Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits says his office received a call Monday afternoon that two West Frankfort residents were lost in the Bell Smith Springs area. Suits says crews searched until about 1 a.m. Tuesday but were unable to locate the pair.

Authorities were able to "ping" the hikers' cell phone and narrow down their location. They were found in the Jackson Falls area around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Suits says both hikers were okay. Multiple departments from Pope and Johnson counties assisted in the search.
