Local Teen's Essay Selected for State Championship
MARION -- Patriotism was the theme Saturday at the Marion VFW, where dozens of student writers were recognized for their literary work. Each wrote an essay expressing their optimism for America's future. It's all part of the VFW "Voices of Democracy Essay Contest".
All of the students made it to the regional finals. But Rachel Shea was selected to move on to the state championship. She says the contest turnout was very motivating.
"To see how many young people actually took the time to participate in this, kind of proves the point of my speech, actually, that we are the future," explains Shea.
The VFW awards more than $2 million in scholarships to students across the country every year.
