Learning Fire Safety Tips

By WSIL Manager

MARION -- Folks in Marion got a chance to learn some fire safety tips Saturday, while having a good time at the Illinois Star Centre Mall.

The event was put on by the Southern Illinois Home Fire Safety organization, and it included a presentation on home fire safety. The Marion Fire Department also brought one of their trucks to the event for the kids, and there was even a chance to meet Sparky the fire mascot.

Organizers say events like these are important because homeowners don't always have a fire plan.
"Most people don't think about fire until the night of their fire, so we want to make sure they have a plan in place to know what to do and also stress they have a meeting place outside the home," says Ken Perry with Southern Illinois Home Fire Safety
Organizers also emphasized the importance of having a stocked emergency kit.
