Last-Minute Shoppers Crowd Carbondale Mall
CARBONDALE -- All of the rain Saturday undoubtedly kept many folks indoors, but this weekend is one of the busier shopping days, since it's the last one before Christmas. So there were big crowds at the University Mall in Carbondale on Sunday.
It's a shopping tradition all on it's own, the last-minute Christmas rush.
"Just really didn't want to come down here and fight the traffic," says Du Quoin resident Dalton Morgan.
It takes a certain type person to wait in staggering lines for hours on Thanksgiving, to get the best deals possible. It takes an entirely different type to wait until the last weekend before Christmas to do their shopping.
Logan Thies from Campbell Hill says, "I'm normally a Christmas Eve shopper but this year I figured I'd get out here early since I had a little time today."
Interestingly enough, the men outnumbered the women at the University Mall. Many didn't want to go on camera, to hide the fact they were shopping so late. Others didn't mind at all.
"Yeah, there is usually the last-minute stuff like teachers and mail carriers, and mom and dad still need something, but the bulk of it's already done," explains Jeramie Eyestone from Marion.
Some shoppers say not all of the Christmas deals are reserved for Black Friday. They found a new technique by waiting until the last minute. Thies says he purposefully likes to wait, to let his Christmas gift ideas marinate a bit.
"I like to let my ideas sink in to the last minute that way I know it's the right gift to get for the people that I'm shopping for."
But Sunday wasn't all about the shopping. A few families also needed to make sure they got their Christmas photo with Santa Claus, before he retired north for the rest of the year.
If you're still not quite done with your shopping, don't start panicking yet. The University Mall will be open until 10 p.m. Monday and 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The Illinois Star Center Mall in Marion will also hold the same holiday hours.
