Preventing Chimney Fires
CARBONDALE -- If you have a fireplace, experts say it's critical you keep the chimney clean. Dean Davis with Dogwood Fireplace and Lawn says chimneys should be cleaned at least once a year. Homeowners can clean simple, straight chimneys by themselves, more complicated ones should be handled by a professional. Davis says those precautions will minimize chances of a flue fire.
"If you have a flue fire, it's nobody's fault but you. It's just total lack of maintenance. It's like driving with worn-out, squeaky breaks and bald tires, you're going to have an accident. Don't do it, get it cleaned," he explains.
Davis also warns you to avoid products that claim to reduce creosote. He says those mainly consist of rock salt, which causes corrosion.
