FRANKLIN CO. -- The Franklin County coroner says William Daniel Payne, 25, of Johnston City, was killed Wednesday in an accident at the Sugar Camp Energy Complex.

It happened around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Viking portal. Mine investigators say Payne was caught between a roof bolting machine and the coal rib.

Payne was taken to Franklin Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed internal bleeding due to blunt force trauma.

This is the second fatal accident in less than seven months at the Sugar Camp Energy Complex. In November, Dallas Dwaine Travelstead, 36, was crushed by a large piece of coal.

Mine Safety and Health Administration officials declined an interview Thursday but tell News 3 they are conducting an onsite investigation.

Visitation for Daniel Payne will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers a trust fund has been set up at Southern Illinois Bank in Johnston City for his son, Trent, due next month. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
