JOHNSON COUNTY -- People against hydraulic fracturing came together to discuss their rights Monday night.

Dozens gathered at a presentation in Vienna. The public meeting included films, fliers and dialogue about the impact of fracking. Several companies have been buying up mineral rights in Johnson County and are considering the oil and gas drilling there. The effort to stop the practice has sparked interest in standing up for community rights.

"It's you know, been empowering to know them and we can use them. And there are other communities across the county exercising them," Adriane Koontz enthused.

The meeting comes four weeks ahead of the primary election. That's when Johnson County voters will weigh in on an advisory referendum that asks whether the county should ban fracking.
