Jackson County Sheriff's Office Investigating Fatal Crash
JACKSON CO. -- Jackson County authorities are investigating a fatal traffic crash in rural Makanda.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office received a call around 11 a.m. Tuesday reporting a burned vehicle down an embankment off Cedar Creek Road, one-half mile west of Union Hill Road.
Investigators believe the 2012 Dodge minivan was westbound on Cedar Creek Road when it failed to negotiate a curve, left the road and hit a tree. The van then went down the embankment and caught fire. The driver was found still inside the van.
The time of the crash hasn't been determined, but authorities think it happened late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. The fire had burned itself out by the time the van was discovered.
The driver's name is not being released at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Jackson County Coroner's Office, and the SIU Department of Public Safety are investigating.
