IDOT Unveils 2014 Construction Plans
WSIL -- Illinois Department of Transportation engineers are expecting a busy construction season.
Work will continue on several major projects in the Marion area. IDOT officials say the $40 million interchange project on Route 13 and Highway 57 is expected to begin in late March or early April.
"Of course we have the I-57 Route 13 interchange," says IDOT engineer Doug Helfrich. "That will be starting up soon. They have been working a little bit this winter. They will have an additional lane in each direction and that will help with the future traffic counts."
Lake of Egypt resident William Robertson says he passes the construction every week and is excited the project is nearly complete.
"I think they have done a really good job on getting the traffic through here. It will improve. It's not too bad. I don't have a problem with it."
Several new construction projects are also slated for the season.
"Construction will take place in Carterville at Division Street," says Helfrich. "They will be adding additional lanes there with frontage roads, and we also have the bridge in Murphysboro. It's ongoing."
In Jefferson County, a $10 million pavement rehabilitation project will take place in July at the interchange of highways 57 and 64, just north of Mt. Vernon.
Travelers can expect delays through each area later this year, although crews will do their best to minimize traffic.
"We try to provide at least two lanes of traffic in each direction while we construct these projects, but there will be times where it might be down to one lane," says Helfrich.
