Hundreds Set Sail in Cardboard Boats

By Evie Allen

CARBONDALE -- Hundreds of people crowded SIU's Campus Lake's shoreline for the 41st annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday.

Alpha Chi Sigma, a professional chemistry fraternity, organizes the event that has drawn more than 4,000 competitors over the years. Folks are given the chance to use their imagination and critical thinking skills to win the boat race.
Artemis Holguin-Mills-Hoffman is a student organizer of the event, who says making a winning vessel can be a very rewarding challenge.
"You look at a chunk of cardboard and have to think how you're going to make that float," he said. "You have to have a sense of creativity, and once you spark that sense, it can take you so many different places, both in life, and just with your social interactions."
The Regatta is a community-wide event and open to all ages.
