Haunted House Fails to Meet Safety Codes
DU QUOIN -- A Perry County haunted house set to operate this weekend was shut down because of safety concerns.
The Du Quoin 8th grade class was planning to raise money by setting up scares inside a local house.
Organizers got an okay from the city. However, the Du Quoin Fire Department didn't find out about the project until this week. The home didn't meet the special fire codes required for a haunted house.
"If they don't have an alarm system, and sprinklers, and some lighting, and some sound where they can stop everything and immediately light it up and get everyone out, get means of egress, a tragedy can happen," said Du Quoin Fire Chief Bob Shaw.
Shaw says there wasn't enough time to find a new location for the fundraiser.
The city is now working on an ordinance so the miscommunication about fire codes doesn't happen again.
