Former Union County Pastor Facing New Charges
JONESBORO -- A former Union County pastor faces new child sex assault charges.
A Union County grand jury indicted Bill Vandergraph last month in two separate cases. Vandergraph, 75, of Alto Pass, is charged with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault.
Court documents allege the crimes took place in the mid 1990s and between 2000 and 2009. Both involve girls under the age of 13.
The December indictments are in addition to Vandergraph's arrest in 2010 for assaulting a four-year-old girl.
At the time of his arrest, Vandergraph was pastor at Full Gospel Pentacostal Church in Alto Pass and president of Friends of the Cross, a group who raised money to restore the Bald Knob Cross.
The 2010 case is still unresolved. In October 2013, a judge found there was enough evidence against Vandergraph to move forward, but his mental status made him unfit for trial.
Vandergraph's attorney said his client suffers from dementia.
On Tuesday, the Union County State's Attorney's Office filed a petition to have Vandergraph declared a sexually dangerous person and committed to the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections. In the petition, prosecutors reference more incidents of sexual assault dating back to the 1970s.
A hearing on the petition is scheduled for February 18.
