Father Fights for Justice in Son's Murder
UNION COUNTY — A local father still waits for answers, almost three years after his son was killed.
Chris Hepburn's four-year-old son Justin was found dead back in 2011. His then girlfriend, Sacha Brown, is charged with killing the boy. She remains free on bond, as her trial keeps getting pushed back.
“He will never be forgotten and I will not rest until there’s justice for my son,” Hepburn urged.
It's been three years of agony for Hepburn; waking up every day without his youngest child Justin.
“There's not a day that goes by that I don't cry for my son,” he said.
In December of 2011, Chris left the four-year-old overnight at his home in Ware, with Brown, for the first and last time. He went to Wisconsin for work.
“The only reason I did it was ‘cuz I wanted to buy him a red wagon for Christmas and that was gonna give me the money to buy it. The very next day I got a phone call saying I needed to come home, that my son was dead,” explained Hepburn.
Police say Brown fractured Justin's skull and then tried to make it look like an accident. She was arrested on first degree murder charges, but released five months later, when a judge lowered her bond.
“It drives me crazy seeing her able to walk in the courtroom on her own free will, being able to do what she wanted and my son will never be able to do what he wants,” he added.
Chris thinks Brown and her attorney keep finding ways to push back the trial date, as a way for her to enjoy freedom while she can.
The Union County States Attorney says they're ready for the trial to start as soon as possible. Their goal is this fall.
Chris has gotten multiple tattoos in his son's memory; a way to keep his little guy with him every hour of the day.
“I shoulda never left his side. For that I'm sorry,” Chris admitted.
Brown's next court appearance is Wednesday morning. Chris hopes a strong showing of support in court will show the need for a trial soon. For now, her bench trial is tentatively set for September.
