SALINE CO. -- Illinois State Police say 18-year-old Machaela Sherrod of Harrisburg has passed away in a vehicle crash Sunday afternoon.

It happened shortly after 12 p.m. on Tuller Road, about a half mile south of Highway 45. ISP says she was driving south on Tuller road with one other person when she somehow drove off the road, down an embankment, and flipped.

Sherrod was not wearing a seat belt and became trapped in the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The other passenger, 22-year-old John Gould of Omaha, was wearing his seat belt and was eventually airlifted to an Evansville hospital.

A friend of Macheala tells News 3 she goes by the name Katie. She and John just got married on Saturday. She also just graduated high school.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
