Enyart Speaks at Bluford Memorial Day Ceremony
JEFFERSON CO. -- The village of Bluford came together Monday to honor veterans dating back to the Civil War.
The service took a place at the community's veterans memorial. The ceremony featured singing, a gun volley, and a reading of the names for veterans that had died in the past year. It was capped off with a flyover by a World War II plane.
U.S. Representative Bill Enyart gave the main address. He talked about his experiences in the military and the service of many people in our region.
"I represent the district with the highest percentage of veterans in the entire state of Illinois," said Enyart. "I think that says a great deal about what our district is about and what southern Illinois is all about."
Bluford built their village memorial in the early 1990s and placed a cross for each local veteran that has died.
The lawn was full with more than 550 crosses by 2012. They've now added an engraved monument to hold the 200 oldest names.
