Electronic Cigarettes Growing Popular in Illinois
CARBONDALE -- It's that time of year when many people are thinking about making a New Years resolution. And if you put "stop smoking" on that list, a local business owner claims he has just the answer.
Owners at the new Vape Shop in Carbondale say e-cigarettes are taking off in our region.
Joshua Brown is the co-owner of The Vape Shop, a new electronic cigarette store in Carbondale. It's only the second one in our region but Brown says the popularity of e-cigarettes is rapidly growing.
"It's pretty easy to convince folks to quit doing things that are terrible for their health. Everyone that smokes knows 4 or 5 people that wish they didn't," he says.
He says it helps to have a healthier alternative.
"You're not getting all the side affects, the carbon monoxides, the tars and all the other cancerous causing elements in, you're just getting the nicotine," says Brown.
The store carries 35 different flavored juices, 5 of them without nicotine.
"Suspended inside of it is the medical grade nicotine and the flavoring. So, the juice contains everything that you're vaping and the vices provide the power to vaporize it," he says.
Brown believes there's another reason for the popularity. He and his wife were spending over $300 a month on traditional cigarettes. He feels the electronic version is cheaper.
"The way that we vape now, it costs us $34 a month to vape. The only continual cost is the juice, so we go through $34 worth of juice a month," says Brown.
The shop also celebrates kicking the habit through signing a quitters board.
"We're excited to be in Carbondale and to be able to educate the community about the electronic cigarette's and a healthier alternative to smoking," says Brown.
Brown says there hasn't been many regulations put on electronic cigarettes here in Illinois. But starting January 1, it will be illegal to sell them to minors.
