PERRY COUNTY -- Families in Du Quoin had the chance to celebrate the end of summer.

The Du Quoin Police Department hosted their Family Night Out in Keyes Park. Community members were able to take part in several events on Saturday, including a beauty pageant and a subway eating contest.

Authorities say it's important for families and young people to know they want the best for the community.

"We need to let these children know that we're the good guys," said Du Quoin Officer Chris Robinson. "Police do get bad raps here and there, and we can understand that. But we as a department, we're a very strong department, we try to do the best thing for our community."

The event had people showing off activities, from tumbling to martial arts, that can keep families active and healthy. There was also plenty of  food, drinks, and ice cream.
