DU QUOIN -- Fire fighters in Du Quoin will soon be getting new equipment. The department has received grant money for upgrades.

The department was awarded $217,636 through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The money will pay for all new protective gear like clothing, helmets and boots. It will also help replace a compressor that dates back to the late 1960's and other equipment.

"We were elated when we found out we were going to get it. It meant some modernization for us that we really were in need of," says Fire Chief Bob Shaw.

The department applied for the grant last Fall.
