WILLIAMSON COUNTY -  Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge will conduct three prescribed burns in the agricultural fields off of Greenbriar Road, Old State Route 13 (near Blue Heron Marina), and Cambria Road.

Refuge managers hoping to be able to conduct the prescribed burn sometime between August 26th and September 5th

The areas to be burned are winter  and spring wheat fields that were planted by agriculture cooperators.  The winter wheat, which was planted last October, provided excellent winter cover as well as food for wildlife.

The spring wheat, which was planted this spring, is an especially good food source and nesting cover for a wide variety of birds.

In the coming days, biologists and fire mangers will work together to burn off the dead wheat stalks if weather conditions permit.  This will make the seeds more available to ground feeding birds such as mourning doves.  These management actions should increase hunter opportunities.
