Children Injured in Jackson Co. Bus Accident
UPDATED 5:00 p.m. FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2014
JACKSON CO. -- It was a rough start to the day for a bus-load of school children in Carbondale. They were on the way to school Friday morning, when their bus collided with a car. It happened around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Giant City Blacktop and No Name Road.
Parents on scene called the situation chaotic.
"Portions of the car were under the bus. There were kids on the bus," says Carla Childs.
Childs lives along Giant City Road and her kids ride the bus to Carbondale High School.
"It's just chaos. But I'm thankful mine weren't on there," explains Childs.
Police say 23-year-old Ashley Blessing was traveling north on Giant City Road, when her car collided with the bus.
"It appears early in the investigation, that the driver of the bus pulled out in front of the vehicle," says Corporal Mark Wilson with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
Giant City School officials say the bus was carrying 14 students and five of them suffered minor injuries. They were treated for what is described as minor head and neck injuries. Wilson says both drivers were taken to the hospital. The bus driver was issued a citation for failure to yield.
"Accidents happen. They happen all the time. We're thankful it wasn't anymore serious than what it was," says Wilson.
Childs says she was amazed how fast school officials let parents know what was going on.
"By the time we walked down here, most of the parents were coming to make sure their children were okay," says Childs.
Giant City Superintendent Belinda Hill issued a statement saying they're thankful none of the students nor the bus driver were seriously hurt. She says thoughts and prayers are with the children and the driver of the car.
We have no word on Blessing's condition. Police say neither driver suffered life threatening injuries.
