CARTERVILLE -- Walker's Bluff and the SIU chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation hosted its first Youth Outdoors event Sunday.

The Illinois Department of National Resource brought out its outdoor trailer for the kids. They were taught how to operate BB guns, bows, and how to fish.  Organizaers say the event is encouraging kids to enjoy outdoor hobbies and be safe while doing them

SIU Wild Turkey Federation President Ross Smith said, "Getting kids educated on proper handling of a firearm could save somebody's life or help them to save a life."

Organizers say the event was a success, even though it started off with a bit of rain. They hope to make the event an annual tradition.
