CARBONDALE -- The downtown Carbondale redevelopment project has received the green light. City leaders say the developer Tartan Realty has reached a deal on the project and will officially begin on Tuesday.

The former 710 Bookstore will be torn down to make room for a new, mixed-use development property called Carbondale Flats. It will house 6,000 square feet of retail space on the bottom floor and student housing on four other floors.

Developers expect construction to take 14 months and will be ready for the start of the 2015 fall semester.
