Carbondale Mayor to Resign
CARBONDALE -- Carbondale Mayor Joel Fritzler has announced he will leave office in February.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Fritzler said he will resign effective February 3 to take a job at Northern Arizona University.
"It has been my pleasure and honor to serve both residents and visitors of the City of Carbondale and the Southern Illinois region for the last 17 years in a variety of capacities," said Fritzler.
Fritzler was elected mayor in April 2011. Prior to that, he served six years on the Carbondale City Council.
A special council meeting will be held January 21 to choose an acting mayor to serve the remainder of Fritzler's term.
