Carbondale Hosts Relay for Life
CARBONDALE -- Hundreds of Jackson County residents were trying to do damage in the battle against cancer Saturday night. They were participating in the annual Relay for Life event at the Carbondale Community High School.
For months, 46 teams of more than 400 people have been raising money for the American Cancer Society. So far, they've collected more than $30,000. Organizers say cancer affects nearly every family, which is why so many people participate in this event.
"One of the things I think is cool about the Carbondale relay is that it involves a lot of students and faculty and staff from SIU, but it's also a really big community event. So you get that good crossover of people who are part of the campus and people who aren't necessarily, and they all get to come together for a really important cause," says event co-chair Gena Stack.
The Jackson County Relay for Life organization says they're not done year. They hope to raise $63,000 by the end of the year.
