Cambria Residents Concerned about Busy Intersection

WILLIAMSON CO. --  A deadly accident on Monday night has left many people who use the busy crossing at Cambria Road and Rt. 13 on edge. IDOT has plans to eventually make the intersection safer and easier to navigate. Some drivers are trying to avoid the crossing until that happens.

A car trying to turn left onto Cambria Road was hit. The impact caused another car to burst into flames. It also sent a third car swerving and several hundred feet into the lake.
The accident took the lives of three people, and it's the second crash at the intersection in a month.
"I think it's really dangerous," said Cambria resident Breanne Deatherage. "It makes me nervous you know every time I go up to it."
Deatherage moved to Cambria late last year. Cambria Road is the main route out of town.
"We're getting ready to go by it right now to go grocery shopping," said Deatherage.
Deatherage feels like the busy intersection needs to be changed. She's watched people struggle to merge onto 13 or cross to the other side.
"Even if you're driving safe, you have to worry about everybody else knowing the rules on what to do there or who's not paying attention," said Deatherage.
The view is shared by Richard Piper. He believes the stretch of road has too much traffic traveling at high speeds, so he tries to avoid it.
"Go down by Carterville High School, and go to Greenbriar to the stoplight, because it's just a whole lot safer," said Piper.
Numbers from IDOT show that in 2011 more than 30,000 people went through the intersection on Route 13 each day. More than 4,000 traveled Cambria Road.
The agency recorded 35 accidents from 2007 to 2012. The crossing is part of the future Route 13 expansion project.
IDOT has four options for the intersection. Two plans would put in a stop light. The other two layouts would block left turns from Cambria Road.
