WSIL -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is looking for information on a vehicle that damaged the Brookport Bridge.

Inspectors believe a truck with an oversized load hit the bridge support beam sometime in the last two or three days. The damaged beam is on the second span from the Kentucky shore. Crews also found other signs of damage along the northbound lane.

"It is alarming that someone would hit the bridge structure and not report it to 911 immediately," said KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Mike McGregor. "While several photos of the railing were posted to social media, there were no calls about the damage to McCracken 911 Dispatch or any of our facilities."

Engineers have issued an immediate 20-ton load limit on the bridge; an 8-feet width restriction has been in place for several years.

The U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge carries approximately 5,000 vehicles across the river from Paducah to Brookport each day.

Anyone with information about the damage is asked to call the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at (270) 898-2431.
