Benton Unveils George Harrison Monument
BENTON -- 50 years ago, a famous Beatles member walked along the streets of Benton. On Saturday, the city celebrated being the temporary home to George Harrison. Benton city officials unveiled a special monument in his honor.
Harrison stayed with his sister Louise for two weeks in 1963. While he was there, he met a lot of people and got to know the area.
Guest speakers for Saturday's ceremony told stories of Harrison's time here in southern Illinois. They say it's important that the area know what a historic moment it was for the city.
"New Beatles fans are coming on board every day and this is a place where they can actually see something of significance that commemorates his visit here," explains Marcia Raubach, one of the guest speakers.
Governor Quinn has officially named September 21st as George Harrison Day in Illinois.
