Bank Robbery Thwarted in Mt. Vernon
MT. VERNON -- A Texas man is facing charges for an attempted bank robbery in Mt. Vernon.
Clark Kirkman, 72, was arrested Friday morning outside Fifth Third Bank on Broadway.
Mt. Vernon Police say they received a report just after 11 a.m. Friday that a man had stolen license plates from a car parked behind JC Penney and put them on his own vehicle. The witness was able to give a description of the car and the license plate number.
Minutes later, investigators spotted the car at Fifth Third Bank. Police say Kirkman had put on a ball cap and sunglasses and was in the process of writing a hold-up note when he was taken into custody.
Kirkman was arrested for attempted bank robbery and felony theft. Mt. Vernon Police say he's also suspected in a bank robbery the week before in Chandler, Arizona.
Federal court documents show Kirkman was sentenced in July 2011 to 37 months in prison for two bank robberies in Springfield, Missouri. He was still on supervised release at the time of his arrest in Mt. Vernon.
The Mt. Vernon Police Department is now assisting the FBI in its investigation.
