Amtrak Expands Pet Program to Second Route

WSIL -- Amtrak is expanding a pilot project that allows pets aboard passenger trains.

Beginning Aug. 11, small pets will be allowed to travel on the Illini and Saluki lines between Carbondale and Chicago.

The rules would be similar to those for cats and dogs that travel inside airplanes: the animals must weigh 20 pounds or less and be in certain types of carriers. The carrier would then be placed under the owner's seat.

Advance reservations and a $25 fee will be required.

Pets are currently allowed on the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg trains between Chicago and Quincy.

The pet program will run through April.
