After-Christmas Sales Bring In More Shoppers
CARBONDALE -- Move over Black Friday, there's another shopping day that's growing bigger and bigger: the After-Christmas sale. At the University Mall in Carbondale, there were plenty of people shopping late morning, but store managers say those were just the early risers. By the afternoon, they expected some of the largest crowds of the year.
JCPenney was having a very good sales day Thursday. Assistant Store Manager Jen Rolape says many people come in for the great deals they can find when items are marked clearance.
"We do run really great promotions the day after, not only the clearance mark downs, a lot of people come out to get their Christmas decorations and gift ideas for next year already, because we have such great prices," Rolape explains.
"So far, they're not looking too bad. There's a lot to pick from, so it's kind of hard to choose," exclaims Johnston City Shopper Diana Riggs.
University Mall General Manager Debbie Tindall says this shopping day didn't just happen overnight. Retailers found another way to keep the money flowing throughout the entire month of December.
"This day has been growing significantly at least the last five years, and it's part of that gift card phenomenon and the money that's under the Christmas tree. And so today will be the largest transaction day of gift cards in the year," Tindall explains.
Those Christmas gift cards are exactly what brings Lenna Reeder and her grandson to the mall Thursday.
"He got a Game Box card for Christmas and he says 'Grandma, we have to go to the mall, I have to use my Game Box card.' And I said well I have to go too, because I have a JCPenney card."
By the end of the day, they'll both have exactly what they wanted for Christmas and retailers will squeeze out a few more dollars before they close the books on the holiday shopping season.
Tindall says the large crowds will likely stick around throughout the weekend and the great deals should last until December 31st, as stores try to clear all their merchandise.
