AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service

By WSIL Manager

CARBONDALE -- There was a candlelight memorial service in Carbondale Sunday night for community members to remember those who passed away from AIDS.

It was going on at the Church of the Good Shepard and organized by the Southern Illinois AIDS Holiday Project. The group serves more than 150 low-income families affected by HIV and AIDS, and the leaders say that could increase.

"The numbers are up significantly and we're going to be helping quite a few more people this year. Which is why we're asking people to mobilize and help us make a difference," says Project Chair Wally Paynter.

He says the organization is encouraging people to check their status and help in the effort to stop the spread of the disease. They are always looking for more volunteers.
