CARTERVILLE -- The 10th annual Southern Illinois Music Festival is in full swing. On Saturday afternoon, opera lovers got to see Donizetti's tragedy "Lucia di Lammermoor" performed at Carterville High School. It's just one of three dozen different performances that will take place all over southern Illinois for the next two and half weeks.

This year's festival theme is Mostly Mozart in the Midwest. Organizers say Mozart is a great composer to begin listening to classical music.

"You can't go wrong with Mozart. It's very easy to listen to, and I think it's a really good transition to listen to classical music, because most of
it it really upbeat and enjoyable," says Program Manager Abigail Simoneau.

There was also a free violin and piano recital Saturday night at Altgeld Hall on the SIU campus. For a full list of concerts, click here.
