MURPHYSBORO -- After 34 years in the classroom, Shirley Krienert, a teacher at General John A. Logan Elementary in Murphysboro, is retiring. Her goal has been to make sure students are learning but having fun at the same time.

"I think that you shouldn't expect them to sit in a desk all day long. So I try to involve them in lots of hands-on activities. I like to think of these activities not as second grade activities but as life skills,"  Krienert explained.

One of those activities was a quilting contest at the National Quiltiing Museum in Paducah.

"They decided which material, sewed all of the pieces together, and submitted it and won first place in the kindergarden through fourth grade category", said Krienert.

The prize money is being used to put in a reading nook at the school.

The students are also learning to come out of their shell by hatching chicks and have just wrapped up their latest musical performance titled "E-I-E-I Oops".
