Class Act: Murphysboro Students Sing for Veterans
MURPHYSBORO -- Some students at Murphysboro Middle School are using their voices to help raise money for local veterans. The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade chorus members held a concert in early November. Proceeds from the show were donated to This Able Veteran.
"This Able Veteran is a local group that provides service dogs to men and women that have physical or mental impairments after serving in our armed forces," explained teacher Jessica Herring.
The concert raised more than $800, but the goal was $1,000. After students got to see one of the service dogs in action, they dug deeper and brought in more money for the cause. In all, they collected more than a thousand bucks.
"It means a lot to me because my dad is a veteran. It shows, for people with relatives and friends who know someone disabled, that we can help," said eighth grader Abbi Hedrick.
Seventh grader Joshua Ruiz agrees. "I think it meant a lot to the veterans. They knew we appreciated them, and we knew they were doing something for us. They have no idea how much we appreciate it."
"We get these holidays off from school. The students get excited, but they don't know why. I thought it was really important to share with them these people have fought for us and are giving us freedom. They're the reason we're getting the day off school," said Herring.
It costs about $25,000 to train a service dog and have it bond with the veteran, so every little bit helps.
