Class Act: Harrisburg Student Council
HARRISBURG -- Some lessons are learned outside the classroom, a group of students in Harrisburg is a prime example of that.
It's hair today, gone tomorrow for Harrisburg Middle School Health teacher Josh Allen. He recently was voted best beard in the Student Council "No Shave November" Shop with a Cop Fundraiser.
Students raised $500 for the Harrisburg Police Department to buy Christmas gifts for kids in need. The No Shave November event is just one of many fundraisers students have organized in 2013. Back in October they donated $1,500 to the 4 C's Shelter.
"I think they need to get an early start on that so they learn that it's important to help others and they get used to doing it early on and when they're adults, they'll make an even greater contribution to our community," said student council advisor Debbie McGowan.
"We'll all be adults one day and if you start soon, you'll be prepared and ready for it when you're older," said student council president Gillian Jones.
After the deadly November 17th tornado Brookport, Harrisburg students reached out to Massac Junior High and donated money.
"It's that pay it forward mentality, we had our tornado last year, and the outpouring from all over the United States was tremendous and we had money to pass along," said principal John Crab.
That amount was $750, council members agreed to raise the total to an even thousand bucks.
"We do it for the community, just so they know we're not just a school thing. We're here for everybody," said Jones.
More fundraising projects are already being planned for the rest of the school year.
