Class Act: Carbondale High School Gets New Motors
CARBONDALE - A vocational class in Jackson County is getting a chance to work with brand new equipment. Carbondale High School has been given two dozen free motors.
For the school's small engines class, the new equipment brings new excitement. The students have been repairing donated motors since the beginning of the school year. They work with lawn mowers, tillers, snowblowers, chainsaws and other machines. "There's a lot of mechanic shops out there that need you right now. So working here is a starting point of getting a job out there," says sophomore Zach Barnhart. A month ago, teacher Brian Rick received word that his class was awarded two dozen brand new engines from Kohler Engines in Wisconsin. Current students only wish they had more time to work with them. "They were kind of sad that they couldn't take the class again to get to work with these new engines instead of having to work with what we worked with in the past," says Rick. Ricks says having so many motors allows his students the opportunity to learn together at the same time. "You will learn the parts. You'll learn the different types of engines, like the new ones we got is different from the old ones," says sophomore Davell Love. With just over a dozen students, Rick says this is the first year the class has had more equipment to work with. "They didn't get the full benefit of these engines, but my freshman intro class will get some work with them, and also the kids that take the class next year will be able to start out with brand new engines." says Rick. Briggs and Stratton Engines are also working out a similar agreement for the spring semester. |
