CARBONDALE -- Another decline in enrollment at SIU this semester.

Spring numbers show 16,619 students currently on the Carbondale campus. That's down 1.6 percent from last spring when 17,152 students were enrolled.

Chancellor Rita Cheng says the spring numbers were not a surprise. More than 2,000 students graduated in December and historically more students enroll in the Fall. Cheng says the decline is less than administrators expected.

"We are still overall struggling with a ten year decline in enrollment, and that senior class that we have is a small one," says Cheng.

The chancellor points out freshman enrollment is on the rise. Even with the small senior class, she says as the freshmen work through the system, the SIU campus will start to see an overall increase in enrollment.

SIU's saw its fall enrollment drop for the 9th straight year in 2013.
