CARBONDALE -- Southern Illinois Healthcare is teaming with McKendree University to offer registered nurses a chance to earn a bachelor's degree.

The program, running one night a week, will be offered to SIH employees only. It will focus on advancing nurses' careers so they can better apply their skills in the workplace.

Dr. Richelle Rennegarbe said nurses will soon be required to have a bachelor's degree.

"We have wonderful community colleges here in southern Illinois, and this program, our RN to BSN, helps them obtain that bachelor's degree," she said. "What they are finding with research is that patient outcomes, patient satisfaction is improved with the more bachelor's prepared nurses you have within the organization."

SIH and Mckendree plan to expand the program in the fall if enough applicants are interested.
