Kids fill the Unity Christian School gym as they get ready for the day's assembly. It's a special day because the children got to wear their pajamas to school. Unity's P.T.O. president Heather Clark helped organize today's assembly.

"Sometimes it's hard for us to remember that not everybody has warm pajamas. Not everybody has a blanket to cuddle up on the couch or in front of the TV and keep yourselves warm," said Clark.

The students have been collecting pajama's, blankets and stuffed animals since black friday. These donated items go to the Women's Center in Carbondale and the Child Advocacy Center in Herrin.
Child advocate for the Women's Center Wendy McDaniel says the Women's Center is very grateful for all the donations.

"That's very great because we need it. We need as much help as we can get, especially for the clients that we have," said McDaniel.

McDaniel says Christmas time is when the center is most in need.

"That's when we get most of our clients because it's a time that the kids are out of school and that's when the abuse starts," said McDaniel.

Alyssa Norman with the Child Advocacy Center says it's good to see students stepping up to the plate.

"The families are in need and they don't know where to go. And that's why I think it's wonderful that the school has done this drive for us. It may be something that agencies don't have necessarily the funds to go out and purchase," said Norman.

Clark says the students jumped at the chance to help.

"This school has so much and I think that you should give back. if you see someone on the street that needs help you need to help them," said 5th grader Blake Clark.

This is the first year the school has held a drive for both organizations. Clark says it's something the P.T.O. hopes to be able to do annually.

"Anytime they can give, it's very exciting because we do teach here at the school that giving is better than receiving," said Clark.

The Women's Center will present the donations to the clients at a December 15th Christmas party.
