Monarch butterflies travel through southern Illinois each year on their way to spend the cold months of winter in Mexico. They pause each day to feast on the nectar of blooming thistles, clovers and milkweed. Visitors are invited to help catch and tag Monarch butterflies as they feed and rest at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. Researchers at the University of Kansas will track these butterflies and monitor the status of their population with this tiny tag.
During the month of September, check out the live monarch display at the Visitor Center located on Route 148 south of Route 13. You might even get to see a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis!
