Donnie and Shirley Ahrens, owners/operators, of The Corn Crib are hosting our second twilight meeting. Located in Gallatin County just west of Shawneetown, IL, Donnie and Shirley opened their roadside stand, The Corn Crib, eight years ago. They have been involved in Illinois’ commercial vegetable industry for a long time, and Donnie has been successfully raising sweet corn for over 40 years. The Corn Crib practices intensive vegetable production by utilizing black plastic mulch, trickle irrigation, and integrated pest management techniques. The main crops they grow include sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, melons, cucumbers, squash, green beans, and pumpkins. Donnie and Shirley will talk about their experiences in raising and selling vegetables, especially sweet corn in southern Illinois. Dr. Rick Weinzierl, Professor/Extension Entomologist, University of Illinois, Crop Sciences, will provide an update on corn earworm control in sweet corn. Derrill Kregel, Rispen Seeds, will be on hand to discuss the different types of sweet corn varieties.
