MOTHER HICKS is an evocative story, richly realized in and around Ware, Illinois, during the Great Depression. It is based on real interviews done by the Federal Writers Project in southern Illinois during the 1930’s. The play chronicles the lives of three outsiders who find themselves, and each other, in a troubled time—a foundling girl known only as Girl; a deaf boy Tuc, eloquent in the language of his silence; and an eccentric recluse, Mother Hicks, who is suspected of being a witch. A haunting tale told through sign-language and poetry, the audience will hear all of the words signed, spoken by other speaking actors in the play. It is an exciting way to experience this magical tale.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Beginning Saturday July 5, tickets can be purchased at the box office at Varsity Center for the Arts, open Monday-Saturday 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to each performance. You may call the box office during these hours, (618) 549-5466, or for a small convenience fee you may purchase tickets online at any time by visiting www.stagecompany.org.
