September 15, 2014 at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM
Do you provide fresh produce or meat to your local or regional markets? Are you thinking about diversifying your farming operation? Are you looking for ways to utilize your small acreage? Would you like to get to know some of our local farmers? Anyone involved or interested in local food production is encouraged and invited to attend.Return to event list.
In this meeting you will get to see how 4th generation owners Laura and Sara Lipe keep the family orchard in production and the different techniques they use in marketing to expand their business. Located south of Carbondale, IL, the Lipe’s family orchard began in the 1880s by Emanuel and Laura Lipe. They grow a variety of crops, and along with peaches, apples, pears, plums and nectarines, they also provide grilling wood chips, cider, chestnuts, a variety of jams, and various vegetables. The Lipe family has also expanded their business by selling their products online.
Over the course of the evening, Sara Lipe will be talking about her experience managing the orchard, and her sister Laura Lipe will be discussing the sorting, packaging, and marketing side of the business. Also, Extension Educators Bronwyn Aly and Nathan Johanning will be discussing small orchard management.
