Event Description

Do you provide fresh produce or meat to your local or regional markets? Are you thinking about diversifying your farming operation? Are you looking for ways to utilize your small acreage? Would you like to get to know some of our local farmers?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you are encouraged to participate in our Southern Illinois Summer Twilight Series. The University of Illinois Extension is teaming up with area farmers to provide four evening meetings to highlight and demonstrate diverse farming enterprises across southern Illinois. Meetings are scheduled for the third Monday evening of each month from June through September, running from 6-8PM.
The intent of these meetings is to provide participants an opportunity to experience different types of production and marketing practices being utilized by southern Illinois producers. By meeting on working farms, participants have the opportunity for a “hands-on” learning experience as well as a chance to ask questions. Over the course of the twilight series, the following topics will be included: high tunnel raspberry and tomato production, mushroom cultivation, apple and peach production, sweetcorn production, freshwater prawns, intensive vegetable production, and utilizing farmers markets, roadside stands, and farm dinners as marketing tools.
Meeting dates and locations:
June 16, 2014 Tanglefoot Ranch, Simpson, IL - Grover & Shirley Webb
July 21, 2014 The Corn Crib, Shawneetown, IL - Donnie & Shirley Ahrens
August 18, 2014 livestock farm - TBA
September 15, 2014 Lipe Orchards, Carbondale, IL - Sara Lipe
