WSIL Replaces Scripts with iPads

WSIL-TV – You may have noticed something missing from the set during recent WSIL news broadcasts.  Scripts. WSIL has replaced news scripts with Apple iPads.

Most news anchors read their stories from teleprompters but have “back-up” scripts in case the teleprompter fails.  That typically calls for printing 40-50 pages of scripts per anchor for each half hour newscast.

With the new iPad technology WSIL estimates a yearly savings of nearly $4,000 in paper costs.

News Anchor Mark Kiesling admits the change from scripts to an iPad was an adjustment.  “After more than 20 years of flipping script paper it took some getting used to,” says Kiesling, “but I was sold after the first newscast.”  The iPad scripts are downloaded before each show as pdf files.  If breaking news occurs, the producer can print the latest scripts on paper or re-load the script files to the iPad during a commercial break.
