SIU's Black Out Cancer Raises Thousands
CARBONDALE -- The SIU Black Out Cancer benefit raised more than $128,000 dollars for cancer research Saturday.
The football Salukis wore black uniforms in their final home game of the season against Eastern Illinois, featuring the name of a person affected by cancer on the back. The public bid on the jerseys through an auction, with the highest bidder securing the number and name of their choice.
The idea was started by senior safety Mike McElroy, who petitioned the NCAA to allow SIU to put names of cancer victims and survivors on the back of the jerseys.
The basketball Salukis also wore black jerseys in their home opener against Ohio Dominican Saturday night.
