Restaurant Report Card: Oct. 28, 2013
WSIL -- Thai Taste in Carbondale earned an 84 at its last visit from the health department and voluntarily agreed to shut down for a day to address cleaning issues and a roach infestation.
The exterminator visited the morning of the inspection, and the health department spotted roaches on the walls, floor, and in glue traps and by the rear freezer. The manager points out treatment draws out the bugs; the report notes there are "too many live insects to operate the kitchen."
There were also several spots that had an oil/food buildup and needed cleaning including the inside and outside of the refrigerators, the cook's line, the walls and floor and the vent hoods and filters.
The inspector came back the next day to find many improvements and cleared Thai Taste to re-open. Management explains the restaurant would rather lose business for a day than operate with anything that's not up to par.
Martel's Pizza, formerly Primo's, in Murphysboro scored an 88.
Cheese that wasn't cold enough was the only critical violation. It was tossed out.
Martel's was also docked because a bag of cheese was in standing water in one of the coolers. A drain line was leaking, and the ice chute on the soda fountain needed to be cleaned.
Triple E Barbecue on Robinson in Marion earned a 93 from the inspector.
There were no critical problems, but the microwave and the floor of the cooler needed to be cleaned.. Additionally, there was no sanitizer in the bucket used to soak the wiping cloths.
It was a 96 for the Blue Boar and Great Boars of Fire Lodge in Cobden.
The wiping cloths here also needed to be kept in a bucket of sanitizer, and some lemons weren't high enough off the floor of the walk-in cooler.
Finally, the top spot this week goes to the Steam Café in Harrisburg with perfect marks on its September inspection.
