WSIL -- Kew Gardens in Herrin returns to the Report Card this week with a 76.

One major problem resulted in two critical deductions. Eggs and rice were left out overnight and had to be thrown away. The inspector also took off points because those potentially hazardous foods that have to either be kept refrigerated or hot enough to ensure they're safe to serve. In all, Kew Gardens lost 10 points for that one issue.

Other problems included food that wasn't being thawed correctly under running water and sagging ceiling tiles that had to be replaced. The restaurant was also docked for using the handle of a piece of equipment to stir food, and because there was a washing machine in the building but not a dryer.

Management says the food left out overnight was already being thrown away; there was a big storm the night before the inspection, so the items didn't make it out to the dumpster.

King Barbacoa in Mt. Vernon boasts a four-point improvement since its last appearance earning an 86.

The only critical issue was that the restaurant did not have a manager certified in food handling safety. The inspector points out King Barbacoa has been without one for nearly six years and gave them a week to get someone enrolled for training.

Cooked foods weren't labeled with the date they were prepared, and there was food buildup on the walls and kitchen equipment.

The health department gave KB Bar B Que in Marion an 86. There were no critical violations, but some food wasn't at least six inches off the floor in-the walk in cooler. The floor in that cooler also needed to be cleaned.

One of the restaurant's hand sins was out of paper towels, and the handle of the ice scoop was touching the ice.

It was a 95 for BJs Garden Inn in Du Quoin.

The only critical problem was some food items that weren't being kept hot enough. It was fixed on the spot.

The inspector asked that personal items be kept away from food and reminded BJs smoking should be done outside, at least 15 feet from all doors and windows.

And the top spot this week goes to The Mills Café in Carrier Mills with a 98. Door handles were dirty and some floor tiles were broken, which cost the café a few points.
