MARION-- Kids headed back to school in Illinois face new immunization rules this year.

Students transferring or going into kindergarten through 12th grade are now required to get two doses of the Rubella and Mumps vaccine.

The Hepatitis B requirement has been moved to 6th grade.  And, two doses of the chickenpox vaccine are required for kindergarten, 6th, and 9th graders.

"All of those diseases are preventable by vaccines.  Vaccines are safe, effective, and more often than not, getting the disease is a lot worse than getting the immunization," said Leah Van Ham, Bi County Health Department Immunization Coordinator.

Each student must be able to verify their vaccinations.  Parents are asked to contact their school for specific requirements.
